VDP batch pasteurizer with gas heating (boiler)

A VDP batch pasteurizer (long-time pasteurization vat) is used to pasteurize milk at food industry plants, family farms, dairy kitchens and catering businesses.

Heating is provided by a heating medium in the heat-exchange jacket. The heating medium is water, which is either heated in the VDP pasteurizer itself (by electric heating elements) or supplied already hot, or as steam, from a boiler house. The heat output required for heating can range from 10 to 100 kW, which, with electric heaters, requires not only a powerful electrical supply but also high electricity costs. In this respect, it is more cost-effective to consider heating the heating medium in a gas boiler and feeding it into the VDP vat.

Let us calculate the cost of heating with electricity and with gas, using the example of a VDP-630 L pasteurizer with a heat output of 60 kW (for convenience, average and rounded values are used in the calculation; costs are converted from roubles at 90 RUB/EUR):

Heating to pasteurization temperature takes about 1 hour (we will not count the cost of maintaining the temperature afterwards); a pasteurization cycle takes 2 hours (including 1 hour of heating, cooling, loading and unloading), so heating runs for 4 hours per shift.

Electric heating costs:

  • 60 kW × €0.044/kWh = €2.67/h
  • per shift: €2.67 × 4 = €10.67/shift

Costs of heating with a gas boiler:

  • 1 m³ of gas gives 9 kWh of heat and costs €0.056
  • 60 kW / 9 kWh = 6.7 m³ of gas per hour, at €0.056 per m³
  • 6.7 m³ × €0.056/m³ = €0.37/h
  • per shift: €0.37 × 4 = €1.49/shift

The cost efficiency of gas heating of a VDP compared with electric heating is:

€2.67 / €0.37 = 7 times

Specifically, with daily single-shift operation, the annual costs (360 days a year) are:

  • electric heating: €10.67 × 360 days = €3,840/year
  • gas heating: €1.49 × 360 days = €536/year

Using gas heating instead of electric heating on a VDP-630 L saves:

€3,840 − €536 = €3,304/year*

*with daily single-shift operation (360 days a year)

Milberg offers VDP pasteurizers both with electric heating elements and in a version for a gas (or other) boiler. All vats can be equipped with automation that provides heating to a set temperature, temperature display, holding for a set time and automatic feeding of product/heating medium. This makes it possible to automatically maintain the set pasteurization temperature, display it and control the gas flame. Send an enquiry and buy a VDP batch pasteurizer for gas heating.
